My Ulitmate Travel Skincare Guide: How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Ultimate Travel Skincare Guide

Now that I've shared why I love to travel and my never-leave-home-withouts, I'm happy to share my routine! Whether you travel as much as I do or jet-set occasionally, short or long fligths can really take a toll on your skin, making it feel dry, puffy, and downright tired. Between the recycled air in the cabin, increased UV exposure, and the hours spent sitting still, your complexion definitely deserves some extra love before, during, and after your travels.

Here's my travel skincare routine with some suggestions that you might find helpful. They're easy steps that will help you feel great from takeoff to landing with calm, hydrated, and vibrant skin.

Before the Flight

1. Cleanse Thoroughly

Always start with a fresh and clean canvas. Remove makeup, sunscreen, and buildup so your skin can better absorb hydration.

My go-to, which I use every day, is the face towel by Clean Skin Club (get 10% off with code JILLIANBLAIRSKIN) to wash the day or night away from my face.

Next, use a gentle cleanser like my personal fave, the Ultra Gentle Cleanser from Face Reality, which is sulfate-free and rich in antioxidants, to clear away impurities without stripping essential moisture. This makes it perfect for preparing your skin for flights.

2. Hydrate + Seal

Airplane cabins are notorious for drying your skin out. Layer hydration by applying a hyaluronic acid serum to draw in moisture (try Hydra-Cool Serum by iS Clinical), then lock it in with a nourishing barrier cream like Cran-Peptide Cream from Face Reality. This two-step method keeps your skin plump and resilient.

3. SPF

UV rays are actually stronger at altitude, especially by the window. Even inside the cabin, apply a protective sunscreen such as Daily SPF 30 from Face Reality to shield against damage. Never leave home or fly wihthout SPF.

During the Flight

1. Skip Makeup

Heavy foundation and powders don't hold up well in dry cabin air and can clog pores. It's actually a great time to give your skin a break. Fly makeup-free for better hydration and comfort. Your glowing skin is all the Makeup you need. Whether it's meeting a loved-one or heading straight to an important meeting from the airport, sometimes it is absolutely necessary apply makeup before you deplane. Plan to do this just before they start to prepare the plane for landing so pack that carry-on wisely so you can access your makeup kit easily.

2. Refresh Hydration

Every few hours, mist your skin with a travel-friendly hydrating spray. On longer flights, boost moisture with a sheet mask mid-journey; it not only revives your skin but also feels like a mini spa session at 30,000 feet.

3. Eye + Lip Care

Delicate areas like the eyes and lips are the first to dehydrate. Keep a soothing eye cream or cooling gel patches handy, and reapply a rich lip balm throughout your flight to avoid dryness and cracks.
