Being pregnant is an incredible journey filled with anticipation and joy, but it often comes with its own set of challenges, especially for your skin.
If you keep up with your skincare during this season of your life, you and your skin will thank yourself later (if that makes any sense!)
The Journey of Pregnancy and Its Effects on Your Skin
As your body undergoes this amazing transformation, you might find that your skin is reacting in ways you didn't expect or even anticipate. Hormonal changes can cause some some unwelcome surprises such as dryness, unexpected breakouts, or even dark spots like melasma suddenly appearing. Melasma is a common skin condition that causes dark, patchy discoloration, usually on the face and most often the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. It is notoriously stubbor). Changes in your skin's elasticity can cause new or make existing stretch marks more prominent, adding to the mix of emotions you might be experiencing.
In the end, creating a thoughtful skincare routine that’s safe for pregnancy is a good idea not just for your skin but also for your peace of mind. You can potentially get ahead of the game, slow down some changes and stay positive about your appearance throughout your pregnancy. Bonus: you're pampering your skin and yourself on the regular.
Pregnancy brings a lot of beautiful transformations and some challenging one. It's not just your wardrobe that’s changing, it’s also your skin. So, it is really important to adjust your skincare routine.
If you focus on gentle nourishment, hydration and protection you're covering all the bases. You may also be extra conscious of ingredients during pregnancy and for your skincare products you should definitely be thinking about ingredients. Using safe active ingredients is not only extra important during this season of life, they can make the biggest difference in results.
Taking care of your skin during this special time can help you feel your best and let's be honest, your body is working hard and you deserve this extra TLC.
Prenatal Skin Care Basics
1. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Super Simple)
Dermatologists recommend a simple regimen during pregnancy and I recommend this simple, three-step daily routine:
Cleanse with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser like Face Reality Ultra Gentle Cleanser.
Moisturize regularly to lock in hydration. My go-to is Face Reality Cran-Peptide Cream.
Protect with broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen every day. I always recommend the Face Reality Daily SPF 28.
2. Ingredients to Avoid
Certain ingredients can be harmful during pregnancy, either due to deep absorption or potential endocrine disruption. While this list is not comprehensive, this includes:
Retinoids and Retinol
Hydroquinone
High-dose salicylic acid
Chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone
Phthalates, formaldehyde and some preservatives
Instead, choose pregnancy-safe alternatives like niacinamide, vitamin C, glycolic or lactic acid (in safe concentrations), and hyaluronic acid.
3. Nourish Your Body
Staying hydrated and enjoying foods packed with antioxidants can really help your skin look its best. When you nourish your body from the inside, you’ll notice that your skin feels more elastic and has a beautiful glow. It's all about taking care of yourself from the inside out. I always try to incorporate the "rainbow" method into my food choices. But generally these foods are typically listed as a good source of antioxidants:
Fruits: Berries, citrus, pomegranate, and avocado provide antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E that support skin health and immune function during pregnancy.
Vegetables: Leafy greens, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and bell peppers deliver antioxidants and nutrients that help protect skin and support healthy development.
Healthy Fats & Proteins: Foods like walnuts, chia or flax seeds, and eggs offer antioxidants, omega-3s, and essential nutrients important for both mom and baby.
Whole Foods & Extras: Oats, quinoa, Greek yogurt, and small amounts of dark chocolate add antioxidants while supporting energy, digestion, and overall wellness.
Beverages: Water infused with fruit and pregnancy-approved herbal teas help maintain hydration while providing light antioxidant benefits.

Sun protection is a must! Hormones can really affect your skin, making it more susceptible to pigmentation issues. So, don’t skip that daily SPF, it's your best friend.
Always patch test new products. Before diving in with a new skincare formula, try it out on a small area of skin first.Better safe than sorry!
Don’t hesitate to consult your provider. If you’re dealing with concerns like acne or pigmentation, it’s a good idea to double-check ingredients or treatments with your healthcare provider.
Always Consult Your Provider
Every pregnancy is unique. While the JBS PreNatal Series and recommended products are selected with pregnancy-safe principles in mind, all expecting clients should consult with their medical provider(s) before beginning any new skincare products or in-studio treatments.
